Ever since its inception, national and international events have been part of its activities. The 4th Global festival has emerged as its annual flagship showcase.

The international film fest stands distinct with its special focus on the culture of Wales. Five movies from Britain will highlight the unique age old civilisation and its supreme culture. Distinguished films like `Brides of the war’ by Peter Edwards, `Hedd Wyn’ by Paul Turner, `Eldva’ by Timlyn, `Little White Lies’ by Caradog James and `Gaenor’ by Paul Morrison will entertain viewers.

Hailing from different cultural and traditional background, a veracity of national and international films will be screened at the film fiesta. The fest provides a common platform which is nothing less than a congregation of different faiths and beliefs. This strongly endorses the message that `cinema is the ultimate religion of the world, unifying all faiths.’

One of the major attractions at the film arena is the inclusion of 14 outstanding documentaries by the Films Division of India. This will serve as a learning experience for the media students at the Marwah Studios who will get due exposure in the centenary old art form of mass communication’. These include `Indira Priydarshini’ by Yash Chaudhary, `CRPF’ by Mahmood Qureshi, `Exploration Antarctica’ by Deepak haldankar, `Man in Search for Man’ by Prem vaidya, `Chitrakaar ki Nazar se’ by Hussain, `Ananta’ by Girish vaidya, `Radha and Krishna’ by J.S.Bhownagary, `Hill Agriculture New Vista’ by Akhilesh Goorha, `Through the Lens’ by Starkey and `Toote Pankh’ by Kuldeep Sinha, `Story of Delhi’ by Serbjeet Singh, `High Adventure on White Water’ by C.L. Films include `Lukka Chuppi’ by Vinod Ganatra, `Yeh Hai Chakkad Bakkad Bambe Bo’ by Sridhar Rangayan, `Chhota Sipahi’ by Jayashree Kand, `Chutkan ki Mahabharat’ by Sankalp Meshram, `Gilli Gilli Atta’ by Pankaj Parashar, `Lagi Shirt’ by Raghubir, `Nandu ka Raja’ by Shaleen Sehgal, `Radio Comes to Rampur’ by Asha Dutta and `Uranchchoo’.

Students from more than 100 schools in Noida and NCR have been invited and even allotted special time slots to participate in the special activities and screenings at the fest.

Another major focus is on the half a dozen films made by famous French Film Director Jean Rouch. Heralded as one of the founders of cinéma vérité in France, his work has many resemblances to direct cinema. His life as a filmmaker spanning over sixty decades in Africa, was manifest with visual anthropology. Influenced by his discovery of surrealism in his early twenties, many films border on the line between fiction and documentary, to create a new style of ethno fiction. His film `Me a Black’ (Moi un Noir) later initiated him into the technique of jump cut popularized by Jean-Luc Godard, is slated for screening at the fest. Other films include `Little by Little’, `Hunting the Lion with Bow and Arrow’, `The Mad Masters’, `Chronicles of Summer’ and `Mosso Mosso’, a tribute to the great legend by Jean Andre Fieschi.

Besides a stream of films to entertain visitors, three workshops will also be held with topics ranging from `Towards Digital Cine’ by K. Hariharan, `From Print to Electronic: Transition in Creativity’ by Santosh Bhartiya and Delhi and `Future of Bollywood’ by Ashok Tyagi. In addition, three seminars will be organized on three consecutive days to provide a platform for film critics and experts from various universities to know about films.

The first seminar will begin with `Corporatisation and Cinema’ as corporatisation is the new buzz in Bollywood. On one level, it has brought about the much needed moolah for filmmakers but on the other snatched away their creative freedom. These two theories will be a topic of discussion by a panel of Sumit Singhal from NDTV and Sudhir Tandon, former DDG of Doordarshan.

Next in succession will be a seminar on the age old relationship between cinema and literature. Indian writers have not made a mark but lyricists have done a commendable job in the world of Hindi films be it Sahir, Gulzar, Jaan Nisar Akhtar with their creative instincts and aesthetic sense. The panelists include Pratap Sahgal and Divik Ramnesh. The last day will witness the most relevant topic `Curse of piracy’ which affects films to a large extent. The panel will include Rajendra Sehgal and Anil Thakur.

As an initiative to promote young budding authors the Asian Art Academy will release five books during the occasion. To spice the event further, talks by eminent speakers from the All India Human Rights Association, World Religious Parliament and Global Yoga Alliance are on the anvil. Last but not the least, three art exhibitions by Tapan Das besides a posters display by the Asian School of Performing Arts along with a series of photos to adorn the venue.

GFFN Noida unfurled its door to connoisseurs’ of films five years ago. The first film fest was on `Peace and Spirituality’ while the second was on `Genre of documentaries’ and the third `Children’s films’. The third festival screened about 227 films from all over the world with more than 5000 footfalls. Critics, movie fans and the media have widely acclaimed the Global Film Festival as one of the most pertinent film festivals in north India. The fest has spread the message of love and unity through cinema and provides an opportunity for filmmakers, media students and professionals to share information about films.

When governance fails, role of media gets highlighted

It’s high time that the media content and style of presentation should be judged and course cor-rected by an ombudsman. This was the crux of the highly motivating seminar – “Media Trial”: Boon or Bane” organized by Asian School of Media Studies’ print Media pro-gramme recently. The chair of the first session on “Is it media’s role to hold trial of the accused?”,Pervez Alam of BBC set the tone of the proceedings by under-scoring the changing role of media. The first speaker Swaraj Thapa,Political Editor of The In-dian Express said that when governance fails, role of media is high-lighted. When the estab-lishment tampers with the evidence, media has to ask uncomfortable questions. Next speaker Ambr-ish Saxena tried to highlight his own removal by Esteemed panelists attending the seminar
I.P University and the role played by media in it. It raised an interesting question whether a panelist can cite his own subjective situation in his presentation. The house was divided. Following the next session on “How about Media’s trial?” chaired by Rahul Dev of Aaj Samaaj, a panelist Puja Mahesh appreciating few media organizations like The Indian Express for doing a clean and clear job she said that few only collect the information and not confirm them which leads into desultory activities and statements later. And hence media is jeopardised. She also focussed on to when media commits a mistake, why the corrigendum is so small after tarnishing some body’s image. She added that “we must respect the judiciary and in the name of TRP and sensationalism, let us not play the blame game”. She ended with a note ‘Jaagte Raho’ for the citizens of India to be more aware and informed. Subi Chaturvedi talked about “Procievers” - masses not only being the receivers but the producers of news. She also said that media was a part of the propaganda and continues to dwell in the same identity even now. She also laid importance as to understand the compulsion of media and pressure on them. She defined audience to be the choosers of the content- “You choose, you decide”.Referring to Uma Khuarana’s case, she contributed that media
should avoid voyeurism. Media literacy is required. Answering a query Rahul said that media does not require any special rights to which Subi disagreed and reconfirmed that they should be enshrined with a few. The seminar was highly successful as more than 100 students participated in it. The Joint Director of ASMS, R.K Singh inaugurated it and Dean (Mass media and Electronic media), OM Gupta introduced the topic and proposed the vote of thanks.

Styling with brushes

Brushes – do they play an important role in styling our hair? Here is an answer! The brush is an instrument which makes hair attractive. The sheer range of hairbrushes available today can make choosing the right one seem as hard as trying to pick the best from among equally enchanting beauties in a contest or trying to find Mr Right through swayamvar. But here is how to solve the mystery. Read this simple primer and buying a brush will no more be a confusing affair. Hairbrushes are of two types:

How to Choose an Everyday Brush

  • Make sure the length and the texture of your hair must suit your hairbrush.
  • Invest in good quality bristles. Bristles can be natural, nylon or a mixture of both.
  • Straight, long and fine hair are better to be comb by natural bristles. They help to give sleek, shiny look without damaging the scalp.
  • Go for nylon or nylon-and-bristle mix brush if you have thick, wavy hair. These bristles work great on short hair.

How to Choose Styling Brush

- A round styling brush gives curl to hair when blow-drying. This radial brush is good for shaping of hair & adds style
- A brush with thick bristles is ideal for creating waves & flicks.

Haute hues

Most of us keep a latest in fashion & jewellery but seldom experiment with new hairstyles & make-up. Let’s check the latest trends in hair & make-up.

Now-a-days curls are “in”, short & shoulder length hair is in & the ‘graduated bob’ is becoming more popular. This hair cut gets longer in the front & shorter around the nape. If you prefer long hair then layering will add to your glamourous look. Fringes are back in style too.

Shades of brown, honey & red are the colours this season for streaking your hair but for global hair colouring, apart from the regular shades such as burgundy & brown, violet is the chic new shade.

Right make-up gives you an instant makeover. Getting right shade of foundation to compliment your skin tone is important. A blusher adds colour to your cheeks. If you are going out in the sun, use a sunscreen.

For the eyes, the heavy smoky look is in style for the evening & party wear, while the soft, subtle look in the day. For the lips, the nude glossy look is in the fashion. Using a moisturizer before applying the lipstick protects your lips & makes your lipstick stay longer. Go for the lighter or neutral shades for the day & darker for the evening- say maroon.

While getting the make-up right is important, it is equally important to remove the make-up. Cleanse, tone & moisturize your skin at the end of the day.

INDIAN FILM RECOMMENDED FOR AMERICAN, CANADIAN SCHOOL CURRICULA

‘Mahek’, the children’s film by Kranti Kanade which has already won several international awards and accolades, has been suggested as a necessary tool for school children in Canadian schools, though it appears to have gone unrecognized within the country.

In a project written by Ernest Agbuya on the initiative of the Teacher Advisory Committee of the Sprockets Toronto International Film Festival for Children, this film produced by the Children’s Film Society, India (CFSI) has been recommended to be shown to children from grades four to six. In the words of an educationist: “This is a wonderful film that celebrates the power of dreams and imagination as key forces for change, creativity, leadership, invention and guilt-free leisure.”

The film in Hindi and English was made in 2007 and won awards in the United States and elsewhere.

Reacting to the news, CFSI Chief Executive Officer Sushovan Banerjee said: ‘It is a matter of great pride and honour for CFSI that our film "Mahek" has founds its way into the school curriculum in Canada as well. Earlier it was introduced as part of the syllabus in Ohio University . Mahek is a film that is simple to understand, rich in content and beautifully portrays the power of dreams in our quest for excellence. Through the charming character of Mahek, the director has brought out the importance of imagination and how we all need to discover our inherent talents in order to achieve success. I only hope that after its success in US and Canada , Mahek will surely find its pride of place in Indian school curriculum as well.’

According to Agbuya, ‘a key element in the plot is an essay competition in Mahek’s class. The full Writing strand of the Language Curriculum is relevant to the ideas presented in this Teacher Resource. There are science connections through references to Isaac Newton and James Watt, two scientists who made key contributions to the studies of energy and forces. Links can also be made to the Grade 3 study of Growth and Changes in Plants. One of the film’s key themes is perseverance, June’s trait for Character Education.’

The film is about young Mahek who seems to be a failure in everything, until a woman claiming to be her fairy godmother tells the young girl to “Look within yourself and you’ll find your strengths.” A writing contest at school seems like the chance for Mahek to use her powerful imagination. The film celebrates the importance of imagination, self-confidence and perseverance, and reminds us that everybody is great at something.

It has been suggested that among other things, teachers can lead a discussion with the class after giving students a chance to share their initial responses to two important quotes in the film: Rabindranath Tagore’s “If you shut your doors to all errors, truth will be shut out”, and Mahatma Gandhi’s “Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.”

These quotes can lead to questions like ‘What did these people really mean when they authored these quotes?’, ‘What do the quotes mean to you?’, and ‘Can you make a text-to-self, text-to-text or text-to-world connection to either of these quotes that would illustrate the truth behind these words?’

There can also be a discussion on the two scientists, Isaac Newton and James Watt. It has been suggested that as shown in the film, an essay competition can be held after the screening. For their topic, students can choose from intelligence, humour, beauty or imagination. The key themes of the film show how students see that even the most ordinary person has something extra-ordinary in him or her.

The crab – which is found in two places in the world, one of them being the Orissa coastline – has been considered important to humanity as scientists want to know how it has survived for millions of years. Riteish Deshmukh as Purab Shastri - Armed with a degree in journalism, Purab Shastri truly believes that the media should be the check point for the people of a country, and therefore, it should report news, instead of manufacturing news. Purabâ??s thinking sets him apart from most youngsters of this country.

Sudeep as Jay Malik - A go-getter and highly aggressive and ambitious son of Harshvardhan Malik, Jay looks at his Dadâ??s news channel purely as a business enterprise that must make profits to justify its existence. He hates that his competition is doing better than him.

Manisha Koirala as Nalini Kashyap - She is the programming head of Harshvardhan Malikâ??s news channel, INDIA 24/7. Having been in the industry for long enough, she has developed a practical view of how things operate here. And this comes in direct conflict with what her boss Harshvardhan Malik thinks.

Paresh Rawal as Mohan Pandey - It is every politicianâ??s dream to become the Prime Minister of his country. To that extent, the leader of the opposition Mohan Pandey is no different from his contemporaries. The only difference being - if the need arises, Pandey can and will kill to get the coveted chair.

Gul Panag as Nandita Sharma - The assistant of an ad filmmaker, Nandita Sharma someday hopes to bag an independent feature film. She is in a live-in relationship with her boyfriend Purab. Nandita is smart, educated, and intelligent.

Mohnish Behl as Amrish Kakkar - He was the first to have the vision and the foresight to realize that even the business of delivering news can be made entertaining. Amrish therefore can be safely held singularly responsible for taking the television news industry to the dogs, or to the heights, depending on how you see it. His channel is no less than a shady brothel, the content that is news is no less than a cheap hooker, and Amrish Kakkar - the most powerful pimp around.

Rajat Kapoor as Naveen Shankalya - Apart from being the son-in-law of Harshvardhan Malik, is also one of the topmost industrialists of the country. Despite this, he is the most insecure man on earth, and wonâ??t rest till he becomes the number one industrialist in the country.

Raima Sen as Yasmin Hussain - An ex-model, and fiancée of Jay Malik, Yasmin watches TV, reads gossip columns, and for most part, takes everything that is dished out to her at face value. She does not understand the intricacies of power games, and hidden motivations behind the actions of people.

Rajpal Yadav as Anand Prakash Trivedi - A creative editor, Anand Prakash Trivedi has a knack for sensationalizing even the driest story and making it sound like the story of the decade with super catchy headlines. More than any filmmaker, he makes far better movies. Only, he calls them NEWS.
